What Is Acne?
Acne is a skin problem caused by overactive oil glands. At puberty, hormones increase and cause increased oil production. This clogs pores and hair follicles, allowing bacteria to build up. That buildup causes pimples, whiteheads and blackheads, which can be unsightly and painful. Hot, humid climates like that found in North Carolina can increase the occurrence of acne.
What Are Common Acne Treatments?
Acne treatments depend on the severity of the problem. Topical treatments might be enough to handle an occasional pimple. For more severe cases, antibiotics (taken by mouth or applied to the skin) can be prescribed for short-term use to reduce inflammation and fight acne-causing bacteria. In more severe cases, isotretinoin (commonly referred to as Accutane) might help control acne and reduce scarring.
